shorn of porn

All this began with a front-page news item in that local English language newspaper that has editorials on Alien landings or Timbuktu while Shillong burns. As I am a sloppy researcher, don’t ask me the date or name of the paper or the name of the policeman whose statement it had printed. It was fairly cliched, as only police statements can be. All that man wanted (and I am not quoting him) was to cleanse the computer screens in cyber cafes of dirty, loathsome, immoral pornographic content. It wanted the owners to install software like Net Nanny (I have really relished some inventive erotica about nannies) so that the boy and girls who frequent these local stops on that great information superhighway are denied access to any infernal sites when they type in words like ‘SEX’ in the search box of http://www.google.com or are confronted with the message ‘server not found’ or ‘site blocked’ when they try accessing any web page which has some pre (read police)-ordained immoral word and image.
So finally luddite has lost it… he is going to flaunt his secret vice. You know how it is; my comrades give me a look when I inform them that I am going to defend Shillongites right to privacy in all too public cyber-cafes. Before I pale into unsalvageable cause, let me assure my friends, I am not going to advocate the content of pornography on the net (as if it needs any advocacy), but testify on behalf of those silent thousands who will be denied the right to read and view material, which some police officer deems pornographic.
Computer geek screams, “Listen luddite, technically it is next to impossible to filter out anything on the net!” I know that geek and I am sure the (Moral) Police knows it too, but the issue is beyond technology, it is about freedom and choice, it is about democratic rights. Allow me to turn a so called vice into a radical political act.
Naked women (naked men too). Men and women, women and women, men and men (not necessarily husband and wife) doing unmentionable things to each other in words and pictures. Porn is an easy target. But it has been difficult to nail the box of porn shut. Tentacles of porn keep on growing. The more you repress it the more it flourishes. The votaries of repression should be given a free ticket to the US to witness the trials of kiddie abusing repressed priests. People who want to repress porn are really not interested in social good but are attempting to create a more repressive society in general. Today porn, tomorrow the HNLC website, day after tomorrow criminalise some human rights site, after a month pulp Rushdie’s novel … the slippery slope of repression can only lead to a society which resembles a prison. If society were a prison, the moral police would be king. Let me flaunt a quote by Theodore Schroeder:
No argument for the suppression of ‘obscene’ literature has ever been offered which, by unavoidable implication, will not justify, and which has not already justified, every other limitation that has ever been put upon mental freedom.
Anyway what is pornographic or obscene? The usual argument has been to invoke some kind of an abstract notion of societal codes and morals; any idea that deviates from its narrow path is customarily deemed pornographic. Like the famous case of that literary masterpiece- D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover. It was banned in the US and UK only because it described CENSORED between the lady and her gamekeeper (read servant). If you happen to read it, now that it is taught in many universities, you would be surprised at the furore it had caused. If LCL was deemed pornographic, then by the same standards you could ban Danielle Steele, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Harold Robbins, Salman Rushdie, and Arundhati Roy… the list would be endless. Maybe our policeman wants that; burn books, ban films, press ESCAPE on the keyboard. But he is not at fault entirely; he suffers from that misconception which tries to impose the views and standards of the few over the others. Like that nineteenth century curiosity Dr. Thomas Bowdler who would produce expurgated versions of Shakespeare (with at least ten percent of his writings removed) and Gibbon for the consumption of the morally and religiously inclined masses. His infamy gave rise to the English word – Bowdlerise; Like, the people have bowdlerized the Old Testament (especially its poetically exquisite Song of Songs). As it was flippantly remarked- Obscenity is whatever gives a judge an @@@@tion.
Now that the moral brigade cannot ignore the changing social standards and become Mr. Bowdler, it has moved away from labeling pornography ungodly, satanic and immoral to painting pornography as the inspirer of social evils like rape, child abuse, eve-teasing and violence.
I accept that you do find violent pornography on the net, which treat women as objects to be degraded and abused. But to draw a causal connection between them and the real life act is intellectually suspect. Rape is not about sexual pleasure but about power. The root cause of rape lies not in the images and stories the rapist consumes but the ideas of male superiority which society accepts as natural order of things. This is like saying that it is scantily clad women who inspire eve teasing and rape. If causality has to be discovered then one has to look at the dominant mythologies of society, which are mostly derived from patriarchal religious worldviews that treat Eve as a spare rib of Adam or Sita as the property of Rama. A patriarchal society gives rise to patriarchal porn. To sound provocative, if I have not provoked you enough, you have to be a male chauvinist *** who believes in the natural superiority of males to be able to derive kicks out of degrading women.
If non-availability of porn was the marker of a pure society free of sexual violence against women, then compare the Scandinavian countries, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, where porn is legally available, to countries like Pakistan and India.

I subscribe to what the French philosopher Voltaire had once said to someone (I am paraphrasing), “Sir, I do not agree with your views, but I would defend your right to express it.” I am sure, Respected Moral Police, you would not return that complement; you would forcefully consign my right to express and consume contrary ideas to flames. There is a Chinese proverb I love- when the finger points at the moon, the fool looks at the finger. And I am not that fool.

  1. Good Arguments! But who’s listening?

  2. Your arguments are like picking specks of dust off the wind!

Feel free to invert the ‘w’ in wind!

  3. FUCK THE PEOPLE DISTRIBUTING SELF TAKEN VIDS AND PICS AND UPLOADING IT TO THE NET…HAVE YOU NO BRAINS OR HEART……SHILLONG IS NO AMERICA…..PLEASE STOP.YOU’RE KILLING HER..

  4. the intellectual advancemnt of any civilization can b judgd by its tolerance towards pornography. N a radical question then arises on the freedom of a woman to choose to engage in porn. Arnt we prejudicd if we see porn as patriachal n the women as victims etc.? What right does a woman have wit regards to her sexuality n freedom of expressing it? what about words like ‘whore’?N what about our own Manik Raitong jumpng the queen to b btrayd by a love child while holding a ‘banana’!! N myths of men luring nymphs(maniacs) n goddess to do god knows what! If u judge ‘porn’ by images n videos then u have a problem n u end up with words like FUCK THE PORN MANIACS! Which u would defintly ‘do’ if givn chance.

  5. just a thought…if u ask any knowledgeable Khasi about the origin of certain kur or clans, u might get a myth which goes something like this: there was a beautiful forest/cave/water nymph/spirit who frequentd a certain spot. One day a khasi man fell in love with her n lured/caught her n took her away to his home, where he kept her. There she livd, took care of him n bore him children and aftr a few years she ran away never to return. From these children came the beginings of certain clans.
Sounds magical to have a supernatural origin, right?
Lets look at another story, this time from reality… Man entices, cheats n kidnaps woman, forcefuly confines her, makes her his slave n also has sex with her without consent or RAPES her, she becomes pregnant n gives birth n finally manages to escape, abandoning her children who are left with the man who kidnapd her. Now u guess what wil he tel them when they ask him about their mother?

  6. khasi women hated their khasi men and love luring with others.they are drawn to the fuckin dkhar:s .fuck this matrilineal society n i just hate it coz it destroys the khasi men day by day.i will never allow this matrilineal belief to be my master.hey u all khasi men fight for authority .only our authority will chased away these fuckin dkhars.be real men and confront these oversmart khasi bitches who roam the streets cluelessly,in every corners and cars and hotels n homes they are fuck by these dkhars.khasi women r the ones who make the society declined by marriages with dkhars and their stolen authority from khasi men mostly the khun fuckin khatduh.from a pure khasi guy.long live hynniewtrep.

    Hey kiddo,
U need never fear. M sure any khasi lass would be charmed by ur eccentric if not bordering on plain psycho, beliefs.

But y all dis misplaced aggresion towards dkhars. Mayb a lil ‘mean dkhar playd with my wee wee’ story u mighta forgotn to mention??

And porn?? I donot understand y d depiction of an act as natural as sex has to be so ostracised. The ironic thing is, censorship of porn by bodies such as the church are what make d industry so successful.

Porn doesn lead to rape. Howdya xplain rape b4 porn then??
Conquering armies would rape the women of the lands they plundered.
It makes so much more sense to adopt the ‘male-superiority’ theory. I side with the saudis on this one.

‘Any man who can rape a women thus leading to their emotional and sexual ruin should have his dick sawn off’..
    Fair trade.

  8. Mawlai shillong khasi state

  9. I already fuck a shillong n having lot of fun at tat time she suck ma banana very hardly i cnt 4get tat moments

  10. Khasi sexy

  11. Some of these comments are hilarious and some of them are just plain sad.. Hey.. man raging against dkhars. Please grow up. Why are you making this about khasi girls doing it with dkhar guys. Its their life. They have the right to “do” whatever they want. Your life does not suddenly gain a purpose if u become anti-dkhar, Get a better hobby or maybe.. oh I don’t know.. Get a life.
As for porn.. Man. I watch porn. you watch porn. Everybody watches porn, and whether we like it or not everybody loves porn. As long as it depicts sex between two consenting adults wiling to show us how good they are at doing it then I don’t see why anybody would have a problem with that.
